Which value are we estimating?
An item has several prices depending on who is asking. WorthRange estimates the first one below, because it is the number you need to sell, buy or decide whether something is worth a closer look.
- Resale value
- What a buyer pays for the used item today on eBay, at auction or locally. This is our estimate.
- Retail price
- What the same item costs new in a store. Usually much higher than resale.
- Insurance replacement value
- What it would cost to replace from a dealer. Set by a certified appraiser, and higher again.
How accurate is a photo valuation?
Honestly: accurate enough to tell you whether something is worth five dollars or five hundred, and not accurate enough to price a specific item for sale without checking. That distinction matters, because those two jobs are what people actually need and only the first can be done from a photograph.
The first job is triage, and it is where an automated estimate earns its place. Faced with a loft full of boxes, the useful question is not what each item is worth but which ten per cent of it deserves any further attention. A photograph answers that reliably: it separates the common from the possibly-interesting, it tells you which categories in the pile have collapsed in value and which have not, and it stops you spending a weekend researching a dinner service that nobody wants.
The second job is pricing a specific item, and that needs things a photograph cannot supply. Centering measured to the millimetre on a card. Whether a watch dial is original or refinished. Whether a signature is genuine. Whether a mechanism runs. Whether the maker’s mark under a vase is period or a later homage. In every category where significant money is involved, the final answer comes from completed sales of the same version in the same condition, and for anything widely faked, from somebody holding it.
That is why every result here gives a range rather than a number, states a confidence level, lists the specific things you should go and check, and links straight to sold listings. A narrow range with high confidence means the item is common and easy to identify. A wide range with low confidence is not a failure of the estimate — it is the estimate telling you the item is hard to place from what it can see, which is itself worth knowing before you price it.
Questions about value estimates
How accurate is an AI value estimate?
It is usually close for common, well-documented items with clear photos, and less certain for rare pieces, unmarked antiques and anything whose value depends on authenticity. That is why every result shows a range, a confidence level and a link to recent sold listings so you can check it.
Is it free?
Yes. You get several free estimates every day with no account. The counter under the button shows how many you have left.
What happens to my photos?
Photos are resized in your browser, sent once to the AI model to produce your estimate, and not stored on our servers. Your recent results are saved only in your own browser, and you can clear them.
What kinds of items can it value?
Almost anything people resell: coins, trading cards, antiques, furniture, jewelry, watches, designer bags, sneakers, toys, records, books, china and electronics. Category pages give tips for each.
Why is the estimate lower than what I paid?
The estimate is a resale price: what a buyer pays for a used item today. Retail prices include store markups, and most things lose value once they are used. Insurance replacement values are higher still.
How do I get a more accurate estimate?
Add a close-up of any label, stamp, signature or serial number, show the back or underside, and type size, condition and whether it works in the details box. Specific details narrow the range more than anything else.
