How to photograph it

Good photos are the biggest single improvement to an estimate. These are the shots that matter most.

  • Photograph the camera front, top and back.
  • Close-up the model name and the lens markings around the front ring.
  • Shine a flashlight through the lens and photograph any haze or fungus.
  • Say whether the shutter fires at all speeds and the meter works.

What decides the price

Brand and model
Some rangefinders, medium-format systems and popular point-and-shoots have strong demand.
Lens condition
Fungus, haze, separation and scratches lower lens value sharply.
Working order
Tested cameras with accurate shutters sell for far more than untested ones.
Completeness
Original lens caps, cases, boxes and manuals add value.

What this market actually looks like

Film cameras divide into a small group people actually shoot with and a much larger group that exists only as shelf decoration, and the price gap between them is enormous. Cameras with a living user base — certain rangefinders, medium-format systems, a handful of compacts that became fashionable, and well-regarded SLR bodies with available lenses — sell readily. Everything else, including most mass-market SLRs from the 1970s and 1980s, is abundant and cheap.

Lenses frequently carry more value than bodies, and they outlast them. A body is a light-tight box with a shutter that eventually fails, while good glass keeps working and can often be adapted to modern digital cameras. For a mixed inherited lot, it is common for the lenses to be worth several times everything else combined.

Working condition is decisive in a way it is not for most collectables, because buyers intend to use these. A camera described as untested sells at a steep discount to one with a confirmed working shutter at all speeds, and the discount reflects genuine risk: repair of a mechanical shutter frequently costs more than the camera is worth.

A handful of compact point-and-shoots became fashionable items rather than photographic tools, and they are priced accordingly, well above what their optical quality would justify. That segment is driven by trend rather than use, which means it is more volatile than the rest of the category and recent completed sales matter far more than older ones.

How condition is judged here

Fire the shutter at every speed
Run through the full range and listen. Slow speeds that sound identical to fast ones indicate a sticky shutter, which is the most common fault and an expensive one.
Check the lens with a torch
Shine a light through from behind. Fungus appears as fine branching threads, haze as a general milkiness, and separation as a coloured edge where glued elements meet. Fungus is the one that spreads.
Light seals and bellows
Foam seals around the back turn to sticky tar after a few decades and are cheap to replace. Pinholes in bellows show as bright spots in a dark room and are not cheap to fix.
Meter and battery type
Many older meters were designed for mercury cells that are no longer sold. A meter that reads correctly on a modern substitute is worth saying so; one that does not is a disclosure.

What costs people money

Most of the value lost in this category is lost before the item is listed, by the owner, with good intentions. These are the four that come up most often.

Listing everything as untested
It is the single biggest discount a seller can apply voluntarily. Even a basic check of shutter, aperture and focus moves the price substantially.
Selling a system as one lot
Bodies, lenses and accessories have different buyers. Splitting a system usually earns considerably more than listing it as a bundle.
Storing in a sealed bag
Trapped humidity is how lens fungus starts, and fungus etches the coating permanently. Cameras want dry air and occasional light.
Cleaning lens elements with household cloths
Coatings scratch easily and scratched coatings are visible in every photograph of the lens. Dust is less of a problem than the marks left by removing it badly.

When to bring in a professional

A camera repair specialist is worth a call before selling anything from the collected rangefinder and medium-format systems, because a service receipt often adds more than it costs on those models. For everything else, test what you can yourself and describe it honestly. If an inherited lot contains a mixture of bodies and lenses, a specialist dealer will value them separately and tell you which pieces justify individual listings, and that sorting is usually the difference between a modest lump sum and a considerably better total.

Common questions

What does untested mean on a listing?

It usually means the seller suspects a fault. Untested cameras sell for much less than tested ones.

How do I check a lens for fungus?

Shine a flashlight through it from behind. Web-like threads or spots inside mean fungus.

Are film cameras popular again?

Yes, film photography has a steady following, which supports prices for working cameras.
