How to photograph it

Good photos are the biggest single improvement to an estimate. These are the shots that matter most.

  • Photograph the front, back, base corners and handles.
  • Close-ups of the heat stamp, date code or serial tag and hardware engravings.
  • Show the interior lining and any wear on the corners.
  • List dust bag, box, receipt and authenticity card in the details box.

What decides the price

Brand and model
Classic models from top houses hold value best; seasonal designs drop faster.
Condition
Corner wear, handle darkening, odor and lining stains lower resale value significantly.
Materials and size
Exotic leathers, popular sizes and sought-after colors add premium.
Completeness
Original dust bag, box, receipt and cards help buyers trust the bag and raise the price.

What this market actually looks like

Designer handbag resale is dominated by a small number of houses and, within them, by a small number of models. The classic quilted and monogrammed styles that have been in continuous production for decades hold their value because demand is steady and supply is controlled. Seasonal pieces, novelty shapes and diffusion lines from the same houses fall away quickly, often to a small fraction of retail.

Authentication is the market's central fact. Counterfeits are sophisticated enough that photographs alone no longer settle the question, so most serious resale now happens through platforms that authenticate in hand, and the fee for that is simply the cost of doing business at these prices. A bag that cannot be authenticated trades at a heavy discount regardless of whether it is genuine.

Condition is graded in a way that is specific to bags and quite unforgiving. Corner wear, handle darkening, interior staining and a misshapen base are the four things buyers examine, and they are exactly the things that ordinary use produces. A bag that has been carried weekly for two years is in a different market from one carried a few times a season.

Completeness matters more than in most fashion categories. The dust bag, the authenticity card where the house issues one, the original receipt and any detachable straps or charms all travel with the bag, and their absence is deducted from the price rather than ignored. For the houses that number their pieces, the date code or serial is part of the listing itself.

How condition is judged here

Hardware and stamping
Font, spacing and depth of the heat stamp, and the finish and weight of the hardware, are where authentication starts. Photograph the stamp straight on and in good light.
Corners and piping
The four bottom corners wear first on almost every design. Rubbing through to the layer beneath is the most common reason a bag drops a condition grade.
Interior lining and odour
Pen marks, cosmetic stains and smoke or perfume odour are all disclosed by serious sellers because they are discovered immediately on delivery and trigger returns.
Structure and sagging
A bag stored empty or crushed loses its shape, and for structured designs that is difficult to reverse. Buyers judge silhouette from the photographs before they read the description.

What costs people money

Most of the value lost in this category is lost before the item is listed, by the owner, with good intentions. These are the four that come up most often.

Conditioning leather before selling
Heavy conditioners darken untreated leathers unevenly and cannot be undone. On the natural-leather trims used by several houses, this is a permanent change.
Selling privately at a high price
Expensive private sales are where both chargeback fraud and genuine disputes concentrate. The authentication platforms take a cut precisely because they absorb that risk.
Storing in plastic
Leather needs air. Plastic traps moisture, and the mould and mildew that follow are the one condition problem that cannot be fixed at all.
Quoting retail as value
Only a handful of models ever approach retail on resale. For everything else the current retail price is irrelevant to what the bag will fetch.

When to bring in a professional

Use an authenticating resale platform for anything from a widely counterfeited house: the commission is lower than the cost of a reversed payment, and the completed-sale prices there are higher because buyers trust them. A separate paid authentication service is worth it only when selling privately at a high price. For vintage pieces from houses that no longer keep records, a specialist dealer's opinion is more reliable than any online checker, and for bags with original receipts and boxes, dig those out before listing rather than after.

Common questions

Can this authenticate my bag?

No. The estimator assumes the bag is genuine and points out visible red flags. Use a professional authentication service before selling a valuable bag.

Which bags hold their value best?

Iconic, continuously made models in neutral colors tend to hold value; trendy seasonal pieces fall faster.

Where should I sell a designer bag?

Resale consignment platforms authenticate and reach buyers but take a commission; selling direct earns more but buyers will ask for proof.
